Lego has finally followed up its amazing Porsche 911 GT3 Technic kit with a kit that's arguably more amazing, and certainly has more pieces. It's the 2018 Bugatti Chiron, and the 1/8 scale kit features 3,599 pieces, which is nearly 1,000 more than the 911. Those pieces make up an impressively detailed model just on looks alone. The blocky LED lights up front, the wide light bar at the rear and the trademark horseshoe design elements all translate surprisingly well to the Lego format. The interior has detailed seats and instruments, and there's even some Chiron luggage that fits under the trunk where there exists a unique serial number. But the really impressive stuff is under the plastic skin. Moving piston engines aren't new to Technic, but it is cool to see that Lego managed to create a tiny version of the W16 engine. You can clearly see each bank of narrow angle V8s and watch all the pistons dance. The engine is even hooked up to a real 8-speed sequential transmission. The transmission can be shifted via paddles in the driver's side footwell. The rear wing moves up and down, too, and is lowered for high-speed mode with a key you build out of Lego pieces. You'll want to make sure you have plenty of space on your table top for the finished product, since it's nearly two feet long. And budget plenty of time for assembling those thousands of pieces. But once you're finished, you'll have your own Bugatti Chiron with many of the same functioning features for so much less money. Uber agrees to buy tens of thousands of Volvo cars for its autonomous fleet
Uber is building out its autonomous fleet with help from Volvo. The car company signed a framework deal to sell up to 24,000 SUVs that can be overlaid with autonomous driving technology to Uber between 2019 and 2021, Reuters reports. XC40 Recharge: Volvo’s First Electric Car, Under $48,000 After Credits

Promise kept: Volvo said it would launch a new electric vehicle each year for the next five years. That began this week with the announcement of the Volvo XC40 Recharge. It will ship in the fall of 2020 as a 2021 model. Volvo projects a 248-mile driving range based on European standards, which translates to something closer to 200-plus miles. This means comparisons with Tesla will begin quickly.
Recharge will be a Volvo sub-brand. The XC40 already exists as a combustion-engine compact SUV. The electrified XC40 will get a new infotainment system that will be powered by Android. Good. Volvo’s existing Sensus Connect system looks gorgeous, but not every user comprehends the interface even if it operates like the tablet it looks like (swiping left and right brings up the rest of the choices).
Shifting Infotainment to Android
In dropping its primarily in-house infotainment system, Sensus Connect, it’s charting a potentially risky path. Some fear using a third-party OS commoditizes the vehicle (it does, to an extent). But the reality is, drivers and passengers care far less about the software underpinning the infotainment system and far, far more about: Does it work? Is it intuitive? Anyway, Google can throw a skin over the top of the software to make it be Volvo-specific.
Also, iPhones will run just fine connected to an Android infotainment system. Volvo isn’t crazy. Just different.
XC40: Gas, PHEV, Soon EV
The XC40 Recharge looks like the superb combustion-engine small crossover we tested and rated highly last year, except with a covered front grille (there’s no radiator) and the left rear flank charging port. This is a subcompact vehicle, 174 inches long, and a snugger fit than Volvo’s XC60 crossover. A smaller, lighter vehicle needs less battery weight to go the same distance.
With the XC40 Recharge, Volvo will offer it with a gasoline (only) four-cylinder engine in several variants (turbocharger, turbo, and supercharger), as a plug-in hybrid, and a pure EV. The EV can be fitted with front and rear electric motors.
Volvo has already committed that every new car line it brings out will be electrified, meaning that there will be at least one version with battery power (EV) or battery assist (PHEV). Volvo also says it intends to cut its corporate carbon footprint by 2025.
Volvo projects the XC40 Recharge pricing to start at $55,000, less an available $7,500 tax credit for most buyers. The cheapest XC40 Volvo, the T4 Momentum, starts at $34,000.

Battery Safety Cage
Volvo builds the lithium-ion battery pack inside a metal shell it calls the Safety Cage, to highlight the company’s commitment to safety dating back to the industry’s first three-point shoulder harness safety belt in 1959.

Then the Tesla Model 3 happened, and its range (one model) offered 300-plus. The New-Car and Concept Hits, Misses, and Revelations from 2018
As usual, the 2018 auto shows in Detroit, Chicago, Geneva, New York, and Los Angeles got the staff to arguing about which new cars, trucks, SUVs, and concepts were hits, which were misses, and which had us scratching our heads. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights and lowlights of the past year, with prospects for those models and concepts in 2019 and beyond.
HIT: Genesis Essentia Concept And the winner of the “Wait, that’s a Hyundai?” award goes to this breathtakingly beautiful concept car. What a work of art.—Aaron Gold

From the sound of it, the team has nailed the brief. The Supra will not come with a manual transmission, which is a surprise to virtually no one.—MF

HIT: Mercedes-Benz G-class Like Jeep’s Wrangler, it’s a serious throwback that now doesn’t always have to make you feel as though you just bought a used car from the mid-’90s. Expect to smile more than ever when you drive one, or see one coming your way.—MM

2019 Volvo S60 Unveiled at New Plant in South Carolina
With the inauguration of its new plant in South Carolina, Volvo now makes vehicles in the U.S., starting with the new S60 premium midsize sedan. The automaker plans to add production of the next-generation XC90 large crossover in 2021.
Volvo has invested $1.1 billion in the U.S. and the plant will be the sole global source of the S60—the first car Volvo has ever made in the U.S. Half the sedans built in the U.S. will be exported.
The S60 begins production this fall with a lineup that includes the front-drive T5 with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine good for 250 hp. The all-wheel-drive T6 offers a turbo- and supercharged 2.0-liter. There will be two plug-in hybrids, but the U.S. only gets the more powerful T8 Twin Engine AWD plug-in where the gas engine is both turbo- and supercharged for a combined 400 horsepower. We do not get the T6 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that gets a combined 340 hp. A mild hybrid with a 48-volt system is expected next year.
There will not be a diesel engine available with the S60 for any market in keeping with Volvo’s commitment to have all vehicles electrified starting in 2019 with a goal of 1 million pure EVs or 25 percent of sales by 2025.
Like its midsize counterparts, the V60 and XC60, the S60 rides on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and has many of the same features. That includes City Safety with Autobrake that brakes to avoid an oncoming collision and recognizes pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals. Optional Pilot Assist will steer, brake, and accelerate up to about 80 mph and has been upgraded to provide better cornering. Other safety systems include Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, and other steering assistance systems as well as optional Cross Traffic Alert with Autobrake.
The S60 gets Volvo’s Sensus Connect infotainment system that can be seen across all its new cars and is compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and 4G. The large touchscreen has many menus with vehicle functions and connectivity.
For those who want to add more performance to their T8 plug-in, the Polestar electric performance division is offering Polestar Engineered which upgrades the wheels, brakes, suspension, and engine control unit, boosting combined horsepower to 415. Instead of 18-inch wheels, the Polestar boasts 19-inch wheels as well as Brembo brakes and Ohlins shock absorbers.
The S60 can be obtained through the Care by Volvo subscription service where there is no down payment, just a flat fee of $775 a month for 24 months, for those who don’t want to buy or lease. Care by Volvo was launched in November and is also available for the XC40 and V60.
T5 models start between $36,795 and $43,895, and T6 models will run from $41,295. The T8, only offered in R-Design and Inscription trims, will start between $55,395 and $56,395. Orders begin today for all S60 models other than the Polestar Engineered version, which will be available for order on June 28. Pricing for that model has not yet been announced, but Volvo says it will sell in limited quantities.
The new Volvo plant is located about 40 miles west of Charleston. The site decision was made back in 2014 in recognition of the importance of the North American market, and the automaker broke ground in 2015. During construction it was known as “Volvo Project Thor.” The idea of building in Mexico was briefly considered and quickly discarded by CEO Hakan Samuelsson.
Initially it will employ 2,000 workers—1,500 will be in place by the end of the year—who will make 60,000 S60s a year, half of them for export. The plant’s capacity is 150,000 vehicles a year with ample land and 2.3 million square feet of buildings. Volvo expects another 2,000 workers to join when it adds the XC90. The site includes the plant, test track, training center, and an office building for about 300 people who work in R&D, purchasing, quality, and sales. Stamping comes from supplier Gestamp.
The plant, which was just inaugurated, has begun making preproduction S60s with Job 1 of saleable sedans coming this fall. The current S60 is made in China and Ghent, Belgium. Production is being phased out of Ghent, but China will continue to make long-wheelbase versions of the S60 for that market.
South Carolina is also home to BMW in Spartanburg and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van plant.

The 2019 XC40 SUV/crossover drops Volvo into the fastest growing slice of the luxury-brand sales pie. That’s the easy part. The harder part is making a little SUV/crossover thing a Volvo, and making Volvo a relevant brand to younger buyers driving the sale of such vehicles—buyers who will still be purchasing some sort of new car three or four decades after old-time, boomer-generation Volvo loyalists are dead.
Based on a bit of wheel time in the new XC40, Volvo’s solution seems fairly straightforward: Start by getting the basics right, in a space-efficient package that can be considered high-value as luxury brands go, and throw in a Scandinavian design aesthetic. And lots of safety features. And introduce some new retailing tricks. I can’t speak for 30- or 35-year-olds, but to this late boomer it seems Volvo has dropped itself squarely among the best little luxury-brand SUV/crossover things going.
At 174 inches in length, on a wheelbase of 106.4, the XC40 is an inch or two larger by most exterior dimensions than the Audi Q3, BMW X1 or Mercedes GLA--vehicles Volvo considers the XC40’s primary competitors. Those incremental dimensional increases translate to a bit more interior volume, and cargo space, and they inch the XC40 closer to compact-class SUVs like the Q5, X3 and GLC.
The XC40 is the first vehicle built on Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). Like the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) under the recently launched S90, XC90 and XC60, CMA can be adjusted in any direction or dimension except the distance between the front axle and dash crossbeam (crucial for crash protection, and home to much of the powertrain). It can accommodate four-cylinder engines (currently Volvo’s only internal combustion power source up to the 90 series) and forthcoming three-cylinders. Most significantly, CMA gives a relatively small-volume company like Volvo the necessary economies of scale to more quickly expand its product lineup, and to more easily migrate systems and features downward from the larger SPA platform.
Volvo is pitching the XC40 as the ultimate urban vehicle, based largely on its safety features and space maximization. Yet the XC40 presents more like a conventional SUV than some of its competitors, and certainly more than new XC60. Lead designer Ian Kettle says he was driven by the idea of a “tough little robot” and the core Scandinavian design themes of “functionality, simplicity and cleanliness of line.”
Whatever that means, the XC40 looks fresh but not radically strange. Its separates itself from other Volvos with the shape of its “Thor’s Hammer” daytime running lights and a concave, rather than convex, grille. It has a rare clamshell hood and no conventional shoulder under the window line. The light-catching crease between its wheel wells is actually a trapezoid, and the body is wider in back than in front. The standard Momentum trim offers a white or body-matching roof, while the upgrade R-Design gets a black roof. The first 4000 XC40s will be built with a little vinyl Swedish flag at the top of each front fender, sort of like the tag on a pair of jeans.
The only engine available at launch with be Volvo’s modular 2.0-liter four at T5 grade—the most potent variant short of the super/turbocharged T6. With 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, the XC40 T5 has a substantial hp edge on the Q3, X1 and GLA (200, 228 and 208 hp, respectively) and basically matches the larger Q5, X3 and GLC (252, 248, 241).
The transmission is Volvo’s Aisin-sourced eight-speed torque-converter automatic. It gives the XC40 as many forward ratios as any of its competitors, and more than most. The Borg Warner all-wheel-drive system can split power 50 front/50 rear as necessary, but it shuts off the rear axle whenever possible during steady-throttle operation to maximize fuel economy, as is the current fashion.
The XC40 is suspended with struts in front and a four-link arrangement with coil springs and an anti-roll bar in back. The R-Design gets firmer springs and dampers, with mono-tube shocks in back. Volvo’s Four Corner adaptive suspension will be offered as an option sometime during the XC40’s first year. A drive-mode switch adjusts steering effort, transmission control, throttle response and AWD bias in pre-set increments or according to individual preference. The largest wheels offered from the factory measure 20 inches in diameter.
Inside, designers focused on maximizing space. There are no speakers in the doors, for example. They’ve been moved to the dash or pillars, with the space they might have occupied filled by expanded, lined door bins. There’s a removable trash bin in the console, a drawer under the driver’s seat, slots for cards and phones, bag hooks in the passenger footwell for takeout and Volvo’s first wireless charge pad. The control interface is centered on Volvo’s vertically-oriented, large-tablet-size Sensus touch screen, with relatively few mechanical switches.
The XC40 is a Volvo (boxy, but good), so it comes standard with nearly the full range of safety features offered in more expensive Volvos. These start with Run-Off Road Mitigation, which is intended to keep the XC40 from leaving the roadway, or to minimize the associated vertical loads and spinal injuries if it does leave the roadway. It includes deformable, energy-absorbing structure in the seat bottoms. The standard features include City Safety with Large Animal, Cyclist and Pedestrian Detection and Automatic Emergency Braking, lane departure protection and Driver Alert intervention. Volvo’s remaining safety systems—including a 360-degree camera and Cross Traffic Alert with brake support—are optional. So is Volvo’s Pilot Assist self-driving feature.
The XC40 may also be the first car you can loan to a friend without sharing the key. The Car Sharing option works through the Volvo app and allows the owner to leave the XC40 at a station or in a parking garage for someone else to use, for as long as the owner determines. The app keeps track of the XC40’s location and miles driven.

XC40 production has started at the Volvo factory in Ghent, Belgium. Demos will reach U.S. dealerships in March, with sales starting in the second quarter of 2018. Then there’s Volvo’s new subscription service, which starts with launch of the XC40 and initially applies only to this car. It’s no accident that Care by Volvo begins with a car geared toward a generation that made subscription services like Netflix, Spotify and the iPhone Upgrade Program a way of life. Care by Volvo customers get the XC40 T5 AWD for 15,000 miles a year, all maintenance and perishables like wiper blades and tires, full concierge support and full insurance coverage from Liberty Mutual with a $500 deductible for one monthly fee--$600 for an optioned Momentum, $700 for an R-Design—with an opportunity to change cars after a year.

Volvo has set aside separate inventory for the Care program and takes most of the risk, which includes the impact a flood of subscription returns might have on resale values or new XC40 demand. Volvo says the primary driver behind Care is convenience, as opposed to value, but the value does not seem horribly out of whack. A standard three-year, 15,000-mile Momentum lease will run about $410 per month with the down payment amortized. So a standard lessee has $190 per month to pay for insurance and maintenance to beat the Care by Volvo price.
However it sells its cars, Volvo has gone from one of the oldest lineups among luxury brands to one of the youngest in the span of two years (thank you, parent Geely). With launch of the XC40, it has three global vehicles that cover the spectrum of booming luxury SUV sales.
Execution
The biggest gripe after a couple hours in the XC40’s driver’s seat might have been Volvo’s designated drive location. Meandering roads along Spain’s Mediterranean coast can be exhilarating if traffic is light, but they’re not nearly as good as a pound across I-80 through the Pennsylvania Wilds in the dead of winter—at least not when it comes to evaluating ride quality, build quality or driver fatigue.
Short of such brutalization, nothing about the XC40 feels lightweight or tinny, and it’s quick (blindingly so to someone whose introduction to Volvo was an ‘80s-era 200 series). The 2.0-liter T5 also powers the big ol’ XC90, lest we forget. In the XC40 it’s almost mighty. There’s an abundance of grunt for the daily grind, and enough rev strength to make a manual-shift rush down a lightly traveled two-lane worth the trouble. The T5 is one of the stronger 2.0Ts going, and who doesn’t make a 2.0T these days? Where others can underwhelm thanks to occasional palpitations or rough edges, the T5 is just strong, smooth and quieter than many.
The XC40’s Aisin-built eight-speed automatic settles mid-pack, in shift control and operation. It’s reasonably well sorted when it comes to response and gear selection, but a bit lumpier than the best torque-converter automatics during aggressive downshifting or fairly quick deceleration. Nonetheless, the XC40’s torque-to-weight ratio and generally rapid response more than make up for any mildly annoying transmission behavior.
The steering is generally light, but not in over-boosted, low-feel style. Sport mode decreases the boost a bit, without the jerkiness you might experience in some other Volvos, but it’s always solid and direct, and it centers itself well. Plug that into the XC40’s compact footprint, with a relatively high seating position, and you’re left with a vehicle that’s light, nimble, and indeed well suited for operating in crowded cities. The firmer suspension calibrations in the XC40 R-Design manage its relatively tall mass and body sway nicely. I Can’t speak to how much softer the Momentum trim might be, because Volvo did not offer one, but the R-Design is so agreeably sorted that it might leave you wondering why anyone needs the late-arriving adaptive suspension--at least on fairly smooth roads. The evaluation might change in Brooklyn or Columbus.
The XC40 is essentially a front-drive crossover, with a transverse engine and transaxle and a lot of mass forward of the front axle, and it’s no surprise that it wants to understeer a bit when it’s pushed. That applies during a fairly gradual build-up of lateral load, or with overaggressive braking and turn in, and throttle-induced bursts of rear-wheel torque don’t do much about it. The XC40 won’t be well suited for a drifting competition, but it’s hard to believe anyone will care. It’s pleasantly deft and solidly predictable.
And now, you no longer need a Tesla Model S, a Mercedes S Class or some other ultra-expensive land barge to experience the joy of Level 2 autonomy. The Pilot Assist semi-autonomous system introduced last year on larger Volvos is optional on the XC40, and within certain, narrow confines it makes this little SUV/crossover thing fully autonomous. It will maintain traffic spacing and manage speed over a broad range, all the way to a stop, and it will track through gentle bends in the freeway without driver input. The XC40 won’t change lanes by simply activating the left turn signal, as the S-Class will, and its autonomous steering gives up sooner than that in a Benz (with plenty of warning to the driver). But it will get a lot of LA drivers through a lot of their daily commute while they shop for new work clothes on their phones. Just saying.
The XC40s interior is pragmatic, but not boring or anything like austere. Finish quality is as good as anything in this class, and like the outside, the inside looks fresh. I’d like more hard buttons—for the fan, airflow direction and temperature, say—but Volvo’s Sensus interface is fairly easy to get a grip on (more so, presumably, for people who grew up manipulating smart phones and tablets). At least as importantly, there is more useful space here than in some competitors, and especially rear head and legroom compared to a Q3 or GLA. The removable trash bin and folding rear load floor might be gimmicks in some fashion, but they’re legitimately useful nonetheless. The load floor can be triangulated to limit the movement of objects placed in back, or tiered to increase floor space, and the cargo blind/parcel shelf can store underneath the load floor so you don’t have to leave it if you want to take it out.
The XC40 really will make a good urban car, based on the interior space extracted from its fairly small footprint, its maneuverability and its park-ability. Yet nothing about it seems insubstantial or cheap, and it will take you into the countryside with comfortable aplomb and reasonable alacrity, without leaving the engagement that goes with a good drive behind.
The Verdict
Let’s go out on a limb here. The new XC40 beats its German competitors by most objective measures, unless maybe you need the power of a CLA45 AMG or you have a Teutonic Cross tattooed on your backside. It has more space and more power for the money. It’s a well-finished, versatile automotive appliance that won’t bore anyone’s pants off. Hard to think of a reason this one isn’t a winner, unless the target demographic thinks Volvos belong to their parents’ boxy-but-good world.

It is a good time to be associated with Volvo. The Swedish brand has flourished under its ownership by Chinese giant Geely – in 2017 alone sales in the UK are up 8% this year, on top of a 7.5% increase last year.
Most of this growth this has been fuelled by the new 90-series line-up (S90, V90 and XC90), which has been much praised by, among others, The Car Expert.

The 90 models are range toppers, however. Can such success transfer to Volvo’s bigger-volume cars? We are here to find out with the launch of the second-generation Volvo XC60 – the SUV that is the brand’s biggest seller of all.
Not surprisingly, Volvo appears to have applied a simple formula in designing the replacement for the original XC60 launched in 2008 – shrink wrap the XC90.
Happily adopting the larger model’s design language, this car could have been built for those who have tried an XC90, loved it but who just can’t justify such a big, upmarket SUV.

Exterior and Interior
The XC60 is the first of Volvo’s mid-sized models to be built onto the brand’s highly flexible SPA (Scaleable Project Architecture) platform. It has been created from the start to accommodate technologies that haven’t arrived yet – connectivity, safety and electrification. Volvo has recently announced that every car it builds from 2019 will have an electric motor.
The new XC60 is a big car, longer and wider than its predecessor, but also lower, which makes it look more purposeful than the outgoing model. This is despite a higher ground clearance which adds to its off-road ability, particularly as every version is all-wheel drive.
Volvo’s current design themes are retained here, but with extras. The T-shaped daytime running lights run around the flanks to the wheel arches, while the clean, smooth upper panels contrast with some more muscular sculpting to the lower doors. All of which gives the car a distinctive look compared to its big sister.

Step inside and the surroundings are familiar to anyone who has tried out a 90 series car. And that is no bad thing, as those interiors are some of the best on the market. The fit and finish is excellent, as good as any acknowledged premium manufacturer.
The dash design is as stylish as it is thoroughly practical – long gone is the confusion of centre console buttons that used to be a Volvo staple, everything now based around a central touchscreen mounted in a much more practical portrait format.
There is plenty of room, front or back. The boot is reasonable though not enormous, and not as capacious as many rivals. Note, too that if one chooses the T8 plug-in hybrid model, its powertrain takes 37 litres from the boot.

Powertrains
With the new platform, Volvo’s latest Drive-E powertrain range translates to the XC60. All four of the engines are four cylinder 2.0-litre units. Buyers who prefer ‘normal’ can choose from diesels with 190 or 235hp or a 254hp petrol plant, all matched to an eight-speed auto transmission.
Range-topper, however, is the T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid. It has a supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine powering the front wheels and an electric motor between the rears. Combined they produce 407hp, but official CO2 emissions of just 49g/km.
Officially Volvo expects 12 per cent of XC60 sales to be T8 models, but they thought that about the XC90 and the actual figure has been quite a lot higher. And with the company’s plans to ramp up hybrid and electric sales over the next decade, we would expect the figure to eventually be a lot more.
Sadly the T8 was not available at the UK launch event. Instead The Car Expert drove the D4-engined car, which is predicted to account for more than half of all XC60 sales in the UK, and the D5. This is an impressive engine, thanks greatly to the clever PowerPulse system that injects compressed air into the turbo to spin it up at slow speeds and remove any lag.
However, one can understand why the D4 will be the big seller. On paper, it doesn’t quite have the pace of rivals such as the equivalent Audi Q5. But it feels enthusiastic, while impeccably refined.
The combination of an 8.4-second 0-62mph time, 55mpg fuel economy and emissions of 133g/km is a reasonable compromise, particularly at prices that are £3,500 less than the D5.

The new XC60 comes with a double wishbone front suspension, and a rear layout that uses a combination of links and a leaf spring across the rear axle. This might seem very old technology, but it offers better grip and less body roll. The latter is still notable, however, if not uncomfortable.
Both of the cars tested on the launch were to R-Design specification, sitting above the entry-level Momentum and described as the ‘dynamic’ trim. This means 30 per cent stiffer springs, thicker anti-roll bars and dampers that react faster.
What all this translates to is a polished, confident performance through twisty corners. It’s not what one would call exciting, but that is not really what the XC60 is about. This is a car that is refined and relaxing to drive, and to be driven in – one could imagine racking up a great many miles without fatigue setting in.
Electronic drive modes help one set the car to suit the environment or the driver’s inclinations. Five modes are available, setting the response of the throttle, gearbox, steering, brakes and stability control. Choose the optional air suspension and that can be set too.
The T8 hybrid, meanwhile, has its own six settings, Hybrid, Pure, Power, AWD, Off Road and Individual.

Equipment
The new XC60 models are significantly more expensive than their predecessors, starting from £32,205, for the D4 in entry-level Momentum trim. However they are also generally well equipped, and of course, safety is a priority. Two new technologies introduced with the model are included even with Momentum versions.
Steer Assist, part of the City Safety package, will automatically steer the car to try and avoid a collision. Oncoming Lane Mitigation will ease the car back into its lane if it detects it drifting across the white line. Steer Assist also forms part of the Blind Spot Information system, bringing the XC60 back into its lane if it senses it drifting towards another car.
Then there is Pilot Assist, the closest thing available to autonomous driving, and a great way to scare fellow travellers by pointing out the steering wheel as it moves by itself. It even steers around curves on the motorway.
Momentum models also include satnav, voice control, two-zone climate control, a power tailgate, heated part-leather front seats – basically a lot of car for the money.
The R-Design models we drove on the launch cost £2,500 more than their equivalent Momentums. The central screen grows from nine to 12 inches, the wheels from 18 to 19 inches, more leather arrives on the seats and steering wheel, and a number of styling touches are added.
One can go further – top of the range is the luxury-pitched Inscription trim, with nappa leather, powered seats, wood inlays and chrome styling additions. It also gets the bigger touchscreen and wheels but not the chassis changes of the R-Design. Cost is £4,000 more than Momentum, and the T8 is only available in Inscription form.

Summary
Volvo hit upon a winning formula with the XC90 and has now applied it to the car’s little sister, which also happens to be the brand’s biggest seller. There are more dynamic, more fun-to-drive alternatives to the Volvo XC60. But as a complete package, combining performance, quality and equipment, this ca ris difficult to ignore.
